Martin Seligman is an American psychologist, educator, and self-help author born on August 12, 1942. He is known for promoting theories of positive psychology and well-being within the scientific community. His theory of learned helplessness is widely recognized among scientific and clinical psychologists. Seligman has been ranked as one of the most cited psychologists of the twentieth century. He holds the Zellerbach Family Chair in Psychology at the University of Pennsylvania, where he directs the Positive Psychology Center and previously served as the director of the clinical training program.
