Marten van der Kooij was a Frisian speed skater from Hylpen, born in 1903. He gained recognition for winning the second Alvestêdetocht, known as the Tolhúster Alvestêdetocht, held on February 28, 1929. The event was initiated by three innkeepers from Leeuwarden, with Kafee it Tolhûs serving as the start and finish point. Van der Kooij completed the race in 10 hours and 32 minutes, with his fellow villager, IJpe Smid, finishing just a minute later. This race marked the last time an Alvestêdetocht was held that year.
