He is notable for being one of the bassists who succeeded Ron Carter in Miles Davis' Second Great Quintet, where he played alongside prominent musicians like Herbie Hancock and Tony Williams. Currently, he is the head of the Jazz Program at Idyllwild Arts Academy and was formerly a member of the Harry Pickens Trio. Hawkins received an honorary doctorate in music performance in 2022.
