Mark P. McCahill is an American programmer and internet pioneer, born on February 7, 1956. He has been influential in the development and popularization of various internet technologies since the late 1980s. McCahill led the development of the Gopher protocol, a predecessor to the World Wide Web, and was involved in establishing the standard for Uniform Resource Locators (URLs) alongside Tim Berners-Lee. Additionally, he developed POPMail, an early email client that significantly impacted later email clients and the promotion of graphical user interfaces in internet technology. He also coined the term 'surfing the internet.'
