He faced significant challenges due to severe visual impairment stemming from multiple eye surgeries. Despite limited support, he pursued long-distance running independently. He debuted internationally in 1986 at the IBSA World Championships and competed in five Paralympics from 1988 to 2004. Though primarily focused on the marathon, he excelled in the 5000m and 10000m events. Farnell's impressive record includes five silver medals and one gold medal in the Paralympic Games.
