After moving to Kenya post-independence, she started her literary career through magazine stories before publishing successful novels and poetry. Noteworthy works include 'Coming to Birth' and 'Murder in Majengo'. Macgoye’s writings often reflect the experiences of Kenyan women from 1956 to 1978. She became a Kenyan citizen in 1964 and was recognized with several literary awards throughout her career.
