Marilyn Mercer Jones, known as Mars Jones, was a pioneering female fisherman and boat captain in the Pacific Northwest. Born on December 19, 1917, she became the first woman to obtain a Coast Guard license in Neah Bay and was an early charter boat skipper. Mars transitioned from singing in her husband's jazz band to commercial fishing, starting in 1948. She owned and operated several charter boats until at least 1989. Despite facing gender discrimination, she earned great respect in her profession and contributed to marine regulations through associations in Washington State.
