Marie 'Bobbie' Poland Fish was an American oceanographer and marine biologist known for her pioneering research in bioacoustics. Her work on underwater sound detection helped the U.S. Navy differentiate between enemy submarines and marine life. In 1966, she received the Distinguished Service Medal, the Navy's highest civilian honor, for her contributions while leading the Underwater Sound of Biological Origin project from 1948 to 1970. She co-founded the Narragansett Marine Laboratory, which later became the University of Rhode Island's Graduate School of Oceanography. Fish published over 200 academic and popular science articles.
