Born on January 18, 1921, in Washington, D.C., she graduated from the school and later earned a graduate degree in theology and philosophy. Canney joined her alma mater's faculty in 1971, eventually becoming the Chair of the Religion Department and influencing various authors throughout her career. She was married to Captain John Joseph Canney Jr., a Korean War soldier who was killed in action, and she lived a notable life until her passing on September 9, 2019.
