She met Holly while working as a receptionist at Peermusic in 1958 and married him shortly after their first date. Following his tragic death in a plane crash in 1959, she experienced a miscarriage and was unable to attend his funeral. Later, she married Joe Diaz and had three children. María Elena is a guardian of Buddy's legacy, owning rights related to his name and image, and co-founded The Buddy Holly Educational Foundation in 2010.
