Margrit Herbst is a German veterinarian, born on July 5, 1940, in Flensburg. She is known for exposing the early stages of the German BSE scandal in 1994, which resulted in her being removed from her position as a veterinary officer for meat hygiene in Segeberg. In recognition of her actions, she received the Whistleblower Prize from the German Scientists Association in 2001, and also the Global Ethics Prize for Civil Courage in the same year, along with the 'Brave Lioness' badge from the German Women Physicians Association in 2003. She declined to accept the conditional Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany.
