She directed the Max Planck Institute for Inorganic Chemistry and was involved in editing the Gmelins Handbuch der anorganischen Chemie. Becke-Goehring earned her Ph.D. and habilitation from Halle University and made significant contributions to the field, particularly in the structure and synthesis of poly(silicon nitride), which was later identified as the first non-metallic superconductor. She received the Alfred Stock Memorial Prize for her research.
