Margaret Smith is a Scottish politician and member of the Liberal Democrats, born in 1961 in Edinburgh. She served as the whip for the Liberal Democrat faction in Parliament. Smith was elected to the Edinburgh City Council in 1995 and became the transport spokesperson in 1997. She won a seat in the newly formed Scottish Parliament in 1999, defeating Donald Gorrie, and defended her mandate in subsequent elections. In 2003, she publicly acknowledged her same-sex relationship and married in 2006. She lost her seat in 2011 elections.
