Margaret Elaine di Menna was a pioneering New Zealand microbiologist born on July 8, 1923. She made history in 1954 as the first woman to earn a Doctor of Philosophy degree from a New Zealand university, with a thesis focused on the yeasts of the human body. She held an MSc(Hons) from the University of Otago, where she was later honored with a reading room named after her. Di Menna received several accolades throughout her career, including the New Zealand 1990 Commemoration Medal and being appointed an Officer of the New Zealand Order of Merit in 1997. She passed away on March 24, 2014, in Hamilton.
