Dr. Margaret Chan is a former Director-General of the World Health Organization, of Chinese and Canadian nationality. She earned her medical degree from the University of Ontario, Canada, and joined the Hong Kong Department of Health in 1978, beginning her public health career. In 1994, she was appointed Director of Health in Hong Kong, where she launched new services to prevent disease spread, enhance health, improve disease surveillance, and train public health professionals, effectively addressing outbreaks of bird flu and SARS.
