Marcus Johannes Sparnaay was a Dutch physicist known for his experimental confirmation of the Casimir effect. He earned his PhD at the University of Utrecht in 1952 and spent his career at Philips Laboratories in Eindhoven until 1983, where he contributed significantly to physics by measuring van der Waals forces. In 1958, he provided a much more accurate confirmation of the Casimir effect using a sophisticated lever device to measure forces between metal plates. His work validated theoretical predictions made by Hendrik Casimir and supported advancements in quantum physics.
