He significantly contributed to Galician nationalism and was a professor of shorthand. Lesteiro is best known for inventing tachygraphy, the fastest known writing system. His work combined his linguistic expertise with a passion for education, shaping the field of shorthand and the recognition of Galician language and culture. He passed away on November 16, 1999.
