His early career included work for La Verdad and El Debate, where he was a war correspondent. He served as director of the General Directorate of Cinematography and Propaganda during the Spanish Civil War and later founded the Círculo Cinematográfico Español. A key figure in Spanish cinema, he was also a cultural attaché and a prolific art collector, known for his connections with notable intellectuals and artists.
