Coming from a bourgeois family, he pursued studies in chemistry, eventually working in a mine where he became aware of workers' hardships. This awareness influenced his writing significantly. He interacted with notable literary figures of the 20th century and was a key author of neorealism. During the Salazar regime, he faced political persecution, censorship, and imprisonment. He died during a train journey to Lisbon on December 31, 1966.
