Makoto Douglas Sakamoto is a retired American artistic gymnast and coach, born on April 8, 1947, in Tokyo, Japan. He competed for the U.S. national team at the 1964 and 1972 Summer Olympics, achieving a 17th place finish in parallel bars in 1972. Sakamoto won multiple AAU titles in the 1960s and later coached at UCLA, guiding prominent gymnasts like Peter Vidmar. He held coaching positions in Australia and at Brigham Young University. Sakamoto was part of the coaching staff for the 1984 Olympic team and was inducted into the Gymnastics Hall of Fame in 1986.
