Makila James is an American diplomat and career Foreign Service Officer within the U.S. State Department. She has held significant roles since 1988, particularly focused on the Caribbean and Africa. James served as the Director of the Office of Caribbean Affairs from 2009 to 2012, then was the U.S. Ambassador to Swaziland from 2012 to 2016. Her later appointment was as Deputy Assistant Secretary for East Africa and the Sudans from 2018 to 2020.
