M. Shadows, born Matthew Charles Sanders on July 31, 1981, is an American singer and songwriter. He is the lead vocalist and a founding member of the heavy metal band Avenged Sevenfold, which he established after graduating in 1999. In 2017, the band achieved notable recognition, ranking third on Ultimate Guitar's list of the top 25 contemporary bands. M. Shadows is known for his powerful vocal style and has been influential in the rock and metal scene.
