He served as the Governor of Meghalaya, with his first appointment in 1995, followed by a second term in 2000. Additionally, he briefly served as the Governor of Arunachal Pradesh in 1996. Jacob holds the distinction of being the longest-serving governor of any Indian state, with a tenure exceeding 11 years. He was married to Achamma Kunnuthara and had four daughters.
