M. Ann Chapman was a New Zealand limnologist born on January 14, 1937, in Dunedin and passed away on May 23, 2009, in Hamilton. She was among the first scientists from New Zealand to visit Antarctica and was the first woman to lead a scientific expedition there. In honor of her contributions to science, Chapman Lake in the Ross Dependency, Antarctica, was named after her. She spent the majority of her academic career teaching at the University of Waikato.
