Luis Rivera Terrazas was a Mexican civil engineer, astronomer, and social activist born on December 21, 1912, in Bácum, Sonora. He contributed to the foundation of the National Astrophysical Observatory of Tonantzintla in 1942 and served as an astrophysicist there from 1943 to 1974. Rivera Terrazas was also an academic and founded the Faculty of Physics at BUAP and later established the Institute of Physics at BUAP in 1974. He became rector of BUAP in 1975 and ran for governor of Puebla in 1986 representing the Workers' Socialist Party.
