Niels participated in the 1948 Winter Olympics in St. Moritz, where he competed in both bobsleigh events. He won a silver medal in the four-man bobsleigh event, teaming up with Max Houben, Freddy Mansveld, and Jacques Mouvet, while finishing tenth in the two-man event.
