Louis A. Carpino was an American chemist, born on December 13, 1927, in Des Moines. He was of Italian descent and pursued his education at Iowa State College and the University of Illinois, where he obtained his bachelor's, master's, and a Ph.D. in organic chemistry. Carpino became an assistant professor at the University of Massachusetts at Amherst in 1954 and gained full professorship in 1967. His research focused on peptide synthesis and the development of new amino acid protecting groups and coupling reagents. He received various awards throughout his career and remained active even after retirement in 2004.
