Linus Carl Pauling (February 28, 1901 – August 19, 1994) was an American chemist, biochemist, chemical engineer, peace activist, author, and educator. He published over 1200 books and papers, including around 850 on scientific subjects. Pauling received the Nobel Prize in Chemistry in 1954 for his scientific work and the Nobel Peace Prize in 1962 for his activism. He was a pioneer in quantum chemistry and molecular biology, significantly contributing to the understanding of chemical bonds and biological structures, including the discovery of the alpha helix in proteins. Pauling promoted disarmament and orthomolecular medicine later in his life.
