She received the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine in 2004 for her work on the olfactory system, specifically for identifying odorant receptors. Buck's research focuses on how odor information is encoded and organized. She has been a faculty member at the University of Washington since 2003 and has served as an investigator at the Howard Hughes Medical Institute since 1994. Additionally, she was elected to the National Academy of Sciences in 2003 and to the Royal Society in 2015.
