He has served as the mayor of Wingene since January 8, 2021, after being elected as a municipal council member at the age of 21 in 1994. Huys has been re-elected continuously and has held various positions, including First Alderman responsible for culture, sports, and youth. He became the first mayor of Zwevezele after the municipal merger in 1977 and assumed multiple responsibilities including public safety and urban planning.
