Landau was awarded the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1962 for his scientific efforts and mathematical formulations that elucidated superfluidity. His work included independent co-discovery of density matrix methods in quantum mechanics, Landau's damping in plasma physics, and the Ginzburg-Landau theory of superconductivity.
