Leo Glans was a Surinamese painter born on April 11, 1911, in Paramaribo. He was notable for being the first Surinamese to study at the Rijksakademie in Amsterdam. Glans opened the Van Gogh studio in 1927, pursuing art education in a country lacking formal training. He engaged in modernist movements like cubism and expressionism and created many still lifes. Tragically, he lost his sight due to leprosy around 1940. In 1946, he married and settled in Wassenaar, where he began an art collection.
