Leland Girard Allbaugh (October 6, 1896 - April 18, 1991) was an influential epidemiologist who played a pivotal role in understanding the Mediterranean diet. In 1948, while working under the Rockefeller Foundation, he studied the dietary habits of the inhabitants of Crete, Greece, concluding that their diet contributed to low levels of heart disease and a relatively high life expectancy. His research highlighted the importance of olives, cereals, legumes, fruits, vegetables, and wild plants as staple foods, forming the foundation for further studies into the health benefits of the Mediterranean diet.
