He completed his cand.polit. degree at the University of Bergen in 1986. Selstad has experience in fieldwork among Native Americans in the USA and in Japan, focusing on social identity, minorities, tradition, and modernity in his research. He obtained his doctoral degree with the dissertation titled 'An Island of Tradition: Ritual Life and Local Traditionalism in a Tokyo Bay Community.'
