Lee gained recognition by winning the BC Card Cup Rookie King tournament. He is the younger brother of the prominent Go player Lee Sedol. To differentiate him from another Lee Sanghun born in 1973, he is often referred to as 'Lee Sanghun (small)' while the older Lee is called 'Lee Sanghun (big)'.
