General Lauri Johannes Sutela (1918-2011) was a Finnish military officer who rose through the ranks to become Chief of Defence from 1974 to 1983. His appointment was notable as he was the first non-combat arms officer in this role, chosen for his seniority. Sutela gained acceptance from various foreign powers including Sweden and the Soviet Union. A Staff Colonel in the 1960s, he contributed to military literature by writing on the adaptation of Soviet weapons systems into Finnish doctrine.
