Lars Johan Materstvedt is a professor of philosophy at NTNU, focusing on medical ethics particularly concerning end-of-life issues. He earned his doctorate in political philosophy with a thesis analyzing the perspectives on the right to self-determination in the context of Robert Nozick's libertarianism. Materstvedt chaired the Ethics Task Force on Palliative Care and Euthanasia for the European Association for Palliative Care and contributed to the Oxford Textbook of Palliative Medicine on euthanasia and physician-assisted suicide. He was also a member of the National Committee for Research Ethics in Medicine and Health.
