She was educated at Ananda Sastralaya and Anula Vidyalaya before attending the University of Colombo. In her political career, she achieved significant success, winning multiple elections and serving as a parliamentary representative for the National Liberation Front. Kusuma was known for her strong electoral victories, including a remarkable 80% of the vote in her first election and later as the sole representative for her party. She resigned from a government post in protest against legislation involving the Tamil language.
