Kurt Egon Hjortstam (1933–2009) was a prominent Swedish mycologist known for his expertise in the taxonomy of corticioid fungi. Despite having only primary school education, he developed a passion for mycology after encouragement from Prof. John Eriksson. Hjortstam authored 139 scientific papers and described 54 new genera and 181 new species, significantly contributing to the field. His work led to the establishment of the genera Kurtia and Hjortstamia, along with several species named to honor him. He was engaged in research in both Sweden and internationally, notably in tropical mycology.
