She previously served as a provincial councillor and is currently a Member of Parliament after winning the 2020 election in Gampaha District as a candidate of the Sri Lanka People's Freedom Alliance. Notably, she is the sister of former provincial councillor Namal Gunawardena and has a background in the airline industry, having worked for SriLankan Airlines.
