Ishii reached the semifinals of the World Championships in Belgrade the following year, where he won a bronze medal after losing to Cuban Héctor Ramírez. Additionally, he claimed victory at the Asian Games in Bangkok in 1978. He turned professional in 1979 but had limited success and retired in 1983 after a title fight loss against Chul-ho Kim.
