Klaus-Dieter Baumgarten (1931-2008) served as the deputy minister for national defense in East Germany and head of the DDR border troops, responsible for guarding the Berlin Wall. A trained carpenter, he joined the communist youth in 1946 and the SED in 1948, quickly rising through the ranks within Volkspolizei. He became a major general in 1974 and later a colonel-general in 1988. After German reunification, he was convicted for involvement in the deaths of refugees and served time in prison. Baumgarten remained politically active post-release, writing for leftist publications.
