Kipchoge Hezekiah Keino, born on January 17, 1940, in Kipsamo, Kenya, is a renowned Kenyan middle- and long-distance runner. He became the first Olympic champion from Kenya and the first African athlete to break a world athletics record. Keino competed in four Olympic Games, winning two gold medals, one silver, and one bronze. His notable victory in the 1500 meters upset favored runner Jim Ryun at the 1968 Mexico Olympics. Post-retirement, he served as the president of the Kenyan Olympic Committee from 1999 to 2017 and has been involved in humanitarian efforts and education initiatives in Kenya.
