Kotani Kimi was a Japanese founder of a religious movement born on January 10, 1901, in Miura, Kanagawa Prefecture. After experiencing the early deaths of her first husband and later her second husband, she became influenced by her brother-in-law and embraced Buddhism. In 1930, she co-founded the Reiyukai, a Buddhist sect. She taught that suffering stemmed from moral failings and promoted traditional family values. Following World War II, she gained popularity among housewives facing post-war struggles. Her movement eventually fragmented into various sects, including Risshō Kōseikai.
