Kesavananda Bharati (1940-2020) was an influential Indian Hindu monk and the Shankaracharya of Edneer Mutt in Kerala. His role as a petitioner in the landmark case Kesavananda Bharati v. State of Kerala established the basic structure doctrine of the Indian Constitution. This doctrine ensures that the core principles of the Constitution cannot be altered by parliamentary amendments. A devotee of the Smartha Bhagawatha tradition and Advaita Vedanta philosophy, he led the monastery from 1961 until his death in 2020.
