He graduated from the University of Cape Town and moved to South-West Africa, where he established a successful architectural practice. McNamara contributed to over 1,170 designs, including notable public structures. In addition to his architectural achievements, he was an anti-Apartheid activist and influential in advocating for Namibia's independence. He passed away from cancer in 2017 in Swakopmund, leaving behind a legacy in both architecture and social justice.
