Kenneth Owen Merten is a former American competition swimmer who excelled in breaststroke events. Born on May 4, 1945, he won three medals at the Pan American Games, including a silver in the 200-meter breaststroke in 1963 and two bronzes in 1967. Merten competed in the 1968 Summer Olympics but did not advance in the breaststroke events. He set American records while at Southern Methodist University and contributed to a world record in the 4×100-meter medley relay. Post-swimming, he had a 32-year career in education and now participates in windsurfing and charity events.
