Initially recognized for his fantastical and decadent style, he later shifted his focus to an aesthetics centered around the concepts of body and spirit. In his later years, facing terminal illness, he composed poetry that dramatized his confrontation with disease and depicted realistic scenes in a balanced classical style. He is sometimes regarded as a participant in the avant-garde tanka movement.
