He graduated from Riga Medical Institute in 1971 and later pursued acting, graduating with excellence from several theatrical programs. He joined Dailes Theatre as an actor in 1971 and became a director in 1975, serving in that capacity until 1983. Auškāps had a significant impact on the Latvian theater scene.
