K. Barry Sharpless is an American chemist born on April 28, 1941, in Philadelphia. He is a professor of chemistry at the Scripps Research Institute in California. He earned his Ph.D. from Stanford University in 1968, where he also completed his postdoctoral work. Sharpless received the Nobel Prize in Chemistry in 2001 for his development of reagents that accelerate chemical reactions, contributing to heart drug production. He was awarded a second Nobel Prize in 2022 for his role in developing click chemistry, making him the fifth person to receive two Nobel Prizes in chemistry.
